Best Baitcast Fishing Reel: Royal Legend Pro Baitcaster Combo Review

by Sam Zane 04 Dec 2025

Let’s face it, there are not many rod and reel combos out there that will serve beginner, intermediate and advanced anglers equally as well. Some combos are great for beginners, while others are more suited for the advanced angler. The KastKing Royal Legend Pro Baitcasting Reel and a number of the Royale Legend Pro Celestial Technique Bass Fishing Rods are well suited to serve across the gamut of anglers whether you are just beginning or high up on the advanced chart. The price point is well within a beginner’s budget, while also great for the advanced and intermediate angler looking to add to their tackle locker. Let’s take a look at three combos I feel will work well for each phase of an anglers ability.

About The Baitcasting Reel — Royal Legend Pro

What Makes the Royal Legend Pro Baitcaster Special?

As mentioned in a previous article, this baitcaster also bears the celestial-inspired paint scheme, which was chosen by our fan base. The captivating colors are reminiscent of the cosmos. The special Celestial paint reflects light uniquely, giving the spinning reel a mesmerizing appearance that shifts with every angle, ensuring each fishing trip is an unforgettable starlit adventure.

How Fast and Smooth is the Royal Legend Pro?

Speed to spare, making it perfect for all three levels of angling. With a gear ratio of 8.0:1, line pick up at a solid rate is easy. Utilizing topwater baits, ripping crankbaits or just getting a bait back for another cast is all an easy task for the Royal Legend Pro.

Is the Royal Legend Pro Baitcaster Suitable for Beginners?

The Royal Legend is built tough too, like many other KastKing reels. The drag is top of the line, boasting a stopping power of 16 pounds of drag. Although this baitcasting reel is tournament ready for the advanced and intermediate angler, it is also the perfect blend of strength and build for the beginner. The 39 mm palm perfect design is a great fit and feel for any angler – young or old, big or small. Weighing a mere 5.5 ounces, this reel is a lightweight powerhouse. The DTCC (Double Tapered Control Chute) line guide allows line to leave the spool with less friction, meaning greater casting distance and fewer backlashes. The ergonomic brake control allows easy adjustments for precise spool rotation, preventing overruns. Add in the high-speed split main shaft and you get more distance and speed. Experience the fluidity of 11+1 MaxiDur double-shielded stainless steel ball bearings, where each retrieve is a testament to ultra-smooth precision. Whether you are a beginner or serious advanced tournament angler, the Royal Legend Pro Baitcaster is for you.

Baitcaster vs Spinning Reel — Which Is Better for You?

When to Use a Spinning Rod VS Baitcasting Rod

Baitcaster vs Spinning Reel Fishing "Lure" Selection

Baitcaster vs Spinning ReelWhen deciding between a baitcaster and a spinning reel, it really depends on your experience level and the type of fishing you plan to do. Baitcasters, like the Royal Legend Pro Combo, offer greater control, accuracy, and power, making them ideal for heavier lures and larger fish. They’re perfect for advanced anglers or anyone looking to cast long distances with precision. On the other hand, spinning reels, such as the Royal Legend Pro Spinning Combo, are easier for beginners to use, require less setup, and are great for lighter lines and lures. The RLP spinning combo provides a versatile setup for throwing finesse baits, light crankbaits, and soft plastics, making it a reliable choice for anglers at any skill level. Choosing the right reel comes down to balancing your comfort, the fish species you’re targeting, and the types of lures you prefer.

Which Baitcaster Combo is Easiest for Beginners?

Now that we have the reel in place, let’s start with the beginner’s edge rod for the best opportunity and easiest to fish on this level. For me, if you are a beginner, and a beginner to baitcasting, you want a lighter side rod to pair up with the Royal Pro Baitcasting reel. I feel the Royal Legend Pro Celestial Jerkbait Rod is the best option for the beginner. This rod is rated for 10 to 20-pound test and 1/4 to 3/4 ounce lures. The rod is short enough to not overburden the beginner, yet a good length to make long casts as well. This rod, when paired with the baitcaster will enable the beginner to throw spinnerbaits, topwaters and crankbaits with ease. It also has the backbone to use for smaller worms and even jigs if you want to spread your horizon.

What Makes the Baitcasting Combo Versatile?

For the intermediate angler, I am going to ramp it up to the 7-foot, 2-inch Topwater Rod which rated for 12 to 25-pound test, and lure weights from 3/8 to 1-1/4 ounces. This weight range, combined with length make this a very versatile rod for most bass lures and even a live bait or two. The difference here lies in the length. The extra 6 inches makes a huge difference in the distance, but it also adds the threat of backlashes by trying to make these long casts. The intermediate angler can adjust the tensioner on the Royal Legend Pro Baitcaster to achieve optimal performance. The fast taper will aid in detecting subtle bites, making it the perfect rod for the intermediate angler. This rod however will not be that good for lighter stick worms and smaller jigs, but spinnerbaits from 3/8 ounce up to larger topwaters in the 1-ounce class and everything in between is a breeze.Spinnerbait on Baitcaster Combo

Why Choose this Baitcaster And Rod for Advanced Anglers?

Moving up to the advanced angler, for me, and I have two of them, is the 7-foot, 6-inch Swimbait Rod. In fact, I also have several other 7-foot, 6-inch rods in the Speed Demon and Assegai lineup. I fish, like most advanced anglers, from a bass boat, but make no mistakes, this rod will work well for shorebound anglers as well. I use this rod length and power for a lot of different lures and live baits. The rod is rated for 12-25 pound test and 1/4 to 1 ounce baits. That is a great range, and with the knowledge and ability an advanced anglers owns, adjusting line diameter and tension will allow lighter baits up to the heavyweights thrown in any situation. For shorebound anglers, the distance you can achieve with this rod is as good as any spinning rod, but the baitcaster gives you total control. I have used this size rod for throwing big Jitterbugs after dark along the shorelines of Long Island with great success.Baitcast rod and reel set ready for freshwater fishing

The Most Colorful KastKing Baitcaster Rod and Reel You Must Have

The bottom line is this is another great set-up from KastKing. The baitcaster is well made, with top of the line components, while the rod is on the same scale. And, if you are like me, and a lot of other anglers I know, the celestial-inspired paint scheme, and the captivating colors are reminiscent of the cosmos. The special Celestial paint reflects light uniquely, giving this baitcasting rod and reel combo a mesmerizing appearance that shifts with every angle, ensuring each fishing trip is an unforgettable starlit adventure.Closeup of baitcast reel with cosmic-style paint
